Park at the parking area on Route 210 on the west side of Greenwood Lake near the New York-New Jersey border on the New Jersey side. The parking lot looks like it is part of a local marina but the trailhead will be evident once you drive in. From the parking area follow the trail as it crosses a stream and winds through the woods before starting to ascend to the ridge. This seems to be a very popular area and there are many paths so watch the trail blazes carefully. The trail ascends quite steeply and at .6 miles you can continue straight ahead or turn left. The choice is yours but I suggest turning left. At .7 miles you will gain the ridge and the trail levels out. At about 1 mile you will be on the shore of Surprise Lake which is another popular spot for local residents. As you leave the Lake a trail goes to the left to a parking area which allows a much shorter and flatter walk to the lake. Bear right around the lake and the trail will start to descend through some laurel for the next .3 miles when it crosses a wet area and the outlet brook for the lake. Watch for an interesting boulder on the right as you walk. From the brook the trail ascends slightly to an overlook of West Pond that is truly beautiful. As you leave West Pond the Beaufort North High Point will be about a .25 mile bushwhack to the west. After coming back from this side trip, the trail runs along another ridge for about .6 miles when, at 3 miles, it starts to descend for .35 miles back to the trail junction where you made your initial left earlier in the hike. Follow the trail down and back to the car.
