Park at the pulloff opposite the trailhead on West Brook Road about 2.0 miles after the intersection with Stonetown Road. Walk across the road to the beginning of the blue blazed Hewitt Butler Trail which is in the middle of a stretch of guard rail. Walk down to a small stream and cross on the stones which can be tricky especially during high water. Ascend the trail on the opposite bank which is steep in places. On the way to the top of the ridge at about .35 miles there is a outstanding viewpoint called Manaticut Point. The trail has its ups and downs and at 1.25 miles the Overlook Rock Trail comes in from the right. This makes a nice return route if you want to make a loop but continue on the Hewitt Butler Trail for another mile until it meets a right of way. Turn right here and walk to the highest point of Long hill at about 2.5 miles. Return by reversing your route or continuing for another .4 miles to the Overlook Rock Trail and taking that trail back to the Hewitt Butler and to the car.
